About me

About me

‘Don’t worry. You are just offering up your language.’ A local Melbourne poet once said to me when I was fretting before performing at my first poetry gig.

As a writer, I strive to move people emotionally through my words. I love reading historical fiction that has an authentic tone and a genuine engagement with the past. My creative drive is motivated by speculating about the past (or different worlds) linked through a fantastic or surreal element. In my writing, I enjoy exploring liminal spaces, those moments of change where the possible and the impossible may occur.

Current Project: Undertow

Undertow is informed by the transformational aspects of the selkie myth and the life-death-life Irish folk tale the Cailleach (Sea Hag). This novel is about love, loss, revenge and renewal; what it looks like and how we prevail and grow from it.

Current Project: Undertow

Synopsis: Undertow

Unaware of the taint of her selkie blood, Ceala Mullan is rejected by the priest from the Choosing – the only road for this eighteen year old to escape her abusive father. She must re-imagine another life for herself beyond an arranged marriage in her 16th century Irish fishing village. A chance meeting with Teague Barden, an outsider and poet, reveals that love can be found in the most unlikely of hearts.

Ceala discovers the murder of her selkie mother at the hands of her father and is, in turn, drowned by him. Existing now as a human consciousness trapped in a skeletal corpse, Ceala wakes to haunt Selkie Bay as the Cailleach, Sea Hag, who seeks revenge on the people who looked the other way. This revenge tragedy is recast when the power of Ceala’s love for Teague enables her to throw off her ghoul state, re-enter humanity and bring justice to all those who had wronged her.

Poetry: Knowing Vincent

Knowing Vincent, Picaro Press (2010) This verse novella explores the relationship of sixteen women to Vincent van Gogh from the cradle to his grave. I have re-imagined these women from primary source documents, paintings and brief footnotes of history. I give voices through the seasons and down the years to these women brushed out of the painter’s life.
